Former Newcastle United skipper Rob Lee feels that cup success should be the main aim at St James Park this season.

The club legend is delighted to seethe Magpiesflying high in the Premier League and knows that expectations will have risen at Newcastle after a superb start to the campaign. But Lee is hoping that United see both the League and FA Cup as genuine routes to glory.

Lee, speaking toCompare.bet, said: The Geordie fans will be thinking Can we win the league here, but I have said many times I would like us to go for a cup we are still in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

We are not going to win the leagueThats not going to happen.

Lee was one of the main men in 1996 when Newcastle came so close to winning the title. And he hopes that they can keep the dream alive after the World Cup.

The former Derby County player said: It reminds me of when I joined back in the 90s, everyone is pulling in the same direction and the club are moving forward at a rate of knots.

I feel Newcastle are the in-form team and it will be very interesting after the World Cup to see if they can maintain it. Its the whole area, when the team is playing well, the team is winning, people are just happy and you can tell that when youre up in Newcastle.

It [football] is their life if you like and for so long, for 14 odd years, they have not had the best owner and have had to put up with a lot, but now they have got owners who are putting their money where their mouth is, got players who want to play for the football club and they have got a manager who is pushing the club forward.
