Newcastle United could soon expand St James Park to an 80,000-capacity mega-stadium as the club looks to rocket to the next level.

Thats according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively toFootball Insiderabout the amazing stadium.

In an interview withThe Athletic(26 February) Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi revealed the club will be staying at St James Park.

He explained It would be like tearing your soul out to build a new stadium.

It was also revealed the club will look to expand St James beyond its current 52,405 capacity.

Kenny admits an expansion makes sense for the club and claimed a bigger crowd would make the stadium even more special.

Its a brilliant move, there is so much tradition there,Kenny toldFootball Insidercorrespondent Ben Wild.

Newcastle fans are really passionate fans, they sell out every week. Ive played there before its amazing.

The place has been electric since the takeover and you can only think that will continue.

Expanding is a good idea. Its almost the next stage of their development as a club.

Its always full so Im sure Newcastle would have no problem filling an 80,000 seater.

Its a great stadium to go to now so imagine the noise if there are 80,000 in there, that will be special.

St James Park has sold out every game it has hosted since the Newcastle takeover went through in October.

The Magpies lie 14th in the Premier League after their 2-0 win over Brentford on Saturday (26 February).
