Manchester United looked at signing Kieran Trippier last year and for many supporters he might still represent one who got away. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to sign some worthy competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back but United balked at the fees Atletico Madrid demanded. Solskjaer was sacked, the interest went cold, and Bury-born Trippier moved to the North East rather than the North West.
Erik ten Hagresisted the temptation to strengthen the position this summer and instead found an alternative in the form ofDiogo Dalot. The Portuguese started the season in fine form, but in recent weeks his performance level has dwindled, perhaps as a result of the intense workload hes been handed, given he has started every match this season.
Just like Wan-Bissaka in his first season, Dalot is in danger of burnout, and even if he stays fit, there are genuine questions about his long-term suitability for Ten Hags side given his recent dip in form.

The Portuguese struggled against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, while on the other side Trippier impressed once again. No player has created more chances from set plays in the Premier League this season than him this season, while the England full-back has also played more passes into the box than any other player this term.
In the long-term pursuit of controlling matches, they could do with a right-back as creative and composed as Trippier.
Another issue needs to be solved next summer
Uniteds problems were amplified by injuries, but their lack of depth in midfield was still made apparent at the weekend. Scott McTominay missed the match through injury, while Christian Eriksen did so through illness. Donny van de Beek is a longer-term injury setback, and also out-of-favour.
The shortage meant that Zidane Iqbal and Kobbie Mainoo both got call-ups to the substitute bench for the match, but, despite their long-term potential, they arent at the required standard right now to be thrown in at the deep end.
If they are nurtured carefully, then one of the teenagers, if not both, could become a viable senior option for Ten Hag, but until they do, they will still need to be in the market for a new midfielder next year.
If there was one winner from Uniteds performance it was Eriksen. The Dane pulled out of the squad late on due to an illness and in his absence Fred was given the progressive midfield role, the same one he shown in so often last season.
Fred was impressive back then with his creativity, but now the standards have risen, and the Brazilian has been left behind. His erratic passing and poor distribution was a hindrance to his side on Sunday afternoon as United once again failed to take control of a game.
Ten Hags long-term vision is for United to force opponents into submission as a result of their own smothering in possession, but that looks a long way off until they can add another player with the same qualities as Eriksen to this side.
At the age of 30, the Denmark international can not be expected to play a key role in every match this season and without a suitable replacement they might need to adopt their tactics when they are playing without him.
De Geas distribution a problem
On the eve of the match David de Gea was talking up his long-term future at the club and entertained the possibility of a new contract, though, by the end of it the same questions about his suitability to the side remained.
He is still arguably the best shot-stopping keeper in the Premier League but just as obvious as those qualities are his flaws, with the Spaniard still an awkward fit in a side that is eager to transform into a confident ball-playing side.
De Gea was guilty of more wayward passing against Newcastle and showed signs of that horrendous Brentford performance when he played a hospital pass straight to Fred on the edge of the box, who immediately lost possession and conceded a shot at goal.
The 31-year-old is quite clearly the first-choice for the rest of the campaign but if Ten Hag wants to take United to the next level then he needs to make some ruthless calls.
Ten Hag didnt want to take any risks with Anthony Martials fitness but now he might wish he had gambled. United lacked firepower once again and hardly ever looked like scoring against a Newcastle side who defended well.
Once again Ronaldo looked lost in front of goal, dropping deep and drifting wide to get on the ball rather than lurking in the box as he struggles to adapt to Ten Hags demands.
Marcus Rashfords introduction gave United a late spark in the forward line but even when he had two chances he squandered them both. He did brilliantly to beat the offside trap and round Nick Pope, but rather than shoot he cut back to Fred who sliced wide.
Then with the last chance of the game he moved well to get on the end of Casemiros cross into the box but headed wide when it mattered most, the finish of a winger rather than a No.9.
On a day in which many long-term squad issues were raised, the need for a long-term centre-forward was also made apparent again.
